Manika, Shamini and Mouma bow out

Kolkata, August 26: It was a fall season at the in the Ordnance Factory Board-conducted 42nd All-India Inter-Institutional Table Tennis Championships at the Khudiram Indoor Stadium here today as three seeds fell by the wayside.

The biggest of them included titleholder and No. 5 Manika Batra, who bowed out in the pre-quarters to unseeded Madhurika Patkar 2-4, while No. 2 K. Shamini lost to No. 7 Divya Deshpande 1-4 and No. 3 Mouma Das went down 3-4 to No. 6 Mousmi Paul in a close encounter that lasted 70 minutes. All three losers are the Petroleum paddlers, representing different outfits.

If Manika lacked concentration against a consistent Patkar, Shamini was guilty of being complacent while Mouma with lost what could have been a one-point advantage at 9-all in the decider hit a wide forehand and from there she was fighting a lost case as Mousmi just shut her out to enter the semifinals. Shamini was error-prone on the day and was doing the catch-up all the time with Divya exploding on the stage. In the semifinals showdown tomorrow morning, it will be Poulomi vs Ankita Das and Divya Deshpande vs Mousmi Paul.

But in the men’s draw, things went as per plans with reigning champion and No. 1 seed Anthony Amalraj ousting G. Sathiyan 4-1 and No. 4 Soumyajit Ghosh downing No. 5 Soumyadeep Roy 4-1 in the top-half. Both Amalraj and Ghosh will clash in the first semifinal. From the bottom half, No. 6 Achanta Sharath Kamal defeated Sanil Shetty 4-1 to meet No.10 Harmeet Desai in the second semifinal. Desai got a walkover from Subhajit Saha who pulled out citing medical reasons. He was reportedly running a high fever.

Sathiyan and Priya win crown

In the only title that was decided on the day, the ONGC pair of G. Sathiyan and Narasimha Priya defeated the IndianOil duo of Sourav Saha and Reeth Rishya Tennison 3-1 (11-6, 7-11, 11-6, 12-10) towin the mixed doubles crown.

Though Saha and Reeth fought well to take the second set and extended the rival pair in the fourth, they failed to combine as well as Sathiyan and Priya did despite making some unforced errors at crucial times
