Deepit, Trisha, Preyesh and Suhana reap season-end benefits

Thane, November 15: Deepit Rajesh Patil of Maharashtra ended the season on a memorable note, winning back-to-back titles in Sub-Junior Boys, while Trisha Gogoi of Assam capped herself in glory to win the Sub-Junior Girls crown, a second one this season, in the on-going 11Sports National Ranking Championships (West) for the Mayor Cup at the Dadoji Konddev Stadium here today.

On the other hand, it was a five-in-a-row feat for Preyesh Suresh Raj of Tamil Nadu while Suhana Saini of Haryana must return home happily after wrapping up her third title-win this season. However, her opponent Pritha Vartikar will be a shade disappointed after failing to score a hat-trick of title triumphs.

Deepit Patil, the lone seeded player to survive the exodus yesterday, completed a satisfactory job when he beat Cadet boy Preyesh, who had earlier downed Shantesh Mapsekar of Goa 4-1 in the final, 4-0 to justify his No. 4 seeding. The taller local lad proved too hot for the Tamil Nadu boy, who made it to the final for the first time and had to play two finals 20 minutes after finishing the first.

Deepit, who is suspect against left-handers, was on the money and Preyesh could not counter as the former had answers for every trick that the Tamil Nadu boy unravelled to unsettle his rival. Playing close to the table, Deepit executed fine shots which brooked little challenge from the youngster.

Trisha, confident after winning her maiden title at Siliguri (East Zone), straightaway ran into 3-0 lead. But Delhi’s Vanshika Bhargava, who created a flutter when she upset Madhurika Patkar in North Zone and reached the semi-final, was totally off-colour. Yet, she made a good comeback to take the fourth and fifth games to cause some panic to her Assam rival. But the latter adapted well to the situation and stopped Vanshika rather quickly. The Delhi girl’s countless mistakes in the sixth game only hastened the process.

Preyesh was completely in his zone despite he and his opponents were meeting each other second time consecutively. Shantesh, who is good at drives and with great inside-out forehand, was okay in patches but the brainy Preyesh was up to everything thrown at him. The Tamil Nadu boy, despite dropping the second game, pulled up his socks to sew it up quickly.

Incidentally, last season, too, he had won all five national ranking titles but was unlucky to lose in the semi-finals of the Sub-Junior and Cadet Nationals held at Siliguri last year.

Suhana, who won the first two zonal (Central and South) titles at Indore and Dharwad, was determined to wrest her crown and was in an attacking mood right from the first point. Despite the first game going into several deuces, she won 15-13. And that was trigger enough for her to push the Pune girl on the back foot. However hard she tried to come back, Pritha could not repeat her Siliguri and Greater Noida performances.
