Vadodara, January 15: Daniya Godil of Gujarat made short work of Maharashtra’s Swara Jangade 3-2 in her first-round Under13 Girls and followed it up with an emphatic 3-0 triumph against Mohana Shree of Tamil Nadu to secure a spot in the main draw of the UTT National Ranking Championships at the Sama Indoor Complex here today.

The Gujarat girl defeated Swara 3-11, 12-10, 6-11, 12-10, 11-8 in the tough opener, going down in the first game rather poorly but making it up in the second after the deuce, clinching the last two crucial points to restore some balance. There was, however, no respite for her as the Maharashtra girl went up 2-1.

Yet, Daniya dug deep in the next to level the score and sewed it up with a comfortable win in the decider. The valiant efforts of Swara came to nought despite going up twice against her opponent before faltering in the fifth game.

Without wasting time against Mohana Shree of Tamil Nadu, Daniya won her second round 11-3, 11-9,11-5 to top Group 7, paving the way for her entry into the second stage.

In Group 8, Charmy Trivedi triumphed over Aarohee Chafekar of Maharashtra 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-4. But the Gujarat girl’s match against Bhavya Rao of Madhya Pradesh will determine who makes the qualification grade. Bhavya scored a win when she defeated Aaroohee 11-1, 11-5, 17-15. In the third game, the Maharashtra girl managed to stretch the girl from MP, as the latter had made too many unforced errors to prolong the agony before finally heaving a sigh of relief.

Yet, the scenario in the top groups presented much promise, but one has to wait for the final verdict about the eventual group winners until tomorrow. Meanwhile, the matches in the Under-13 Boys got underway with one round of matches.

In the Under-11 Boys and Girls, 32 qualifiers in each section emerged. The kids also participated enthusiastically in the open draw for the second stage after their group engagements got over. The boys and the girls will have one round of main draw matches today before the finals tomorrow.

The Under-17 Boys and Girls will also enter the arena tomorrow when their group matches begin in the afternoon. However, the top eight players in both sections will have an off day as their action gets underway from Tuesday after the qualification rounds end.
