Manika shows steady progress

Indore: Manika Batra has been the lone Indian paddler who has gained much in terms of world ranking points despite her first-round loss in the Rio Olympics along with a marginal improvement for Mouma Das.

Unfortunately, however, both the male members of the Indian squad at Rio—A. Sharath Kamal and Soumyajit Ghosh—have dropped down the ladder, as per by the International Table Tennis Federation’s September ranking list.

But there is some good news for Indian table tennis as Manav Thakkar has made remarkable and steady progress in both the Under-21 and Under-18 Boys sections, jumping up several places. Similarly, there are two players in Ayhika Mukherjee and Priyanka Pareek who have made it to the world ranking list for the first time with notable performances in their categories.

Manika and Mouma, who had competed in both the Bulgaria and Czech Open (Major) events, also won the bronze in women’s doubles apart from qualifying for the main draw in women’s singles. All these have contributed to their gain as Manika is placed at No. 113, a jump of 14 places from her previous 127. Mouma, though, has gained just five places to be at 145 from 150. Manika has also moved up to 25 from 31 in U-21 Girls section—she competed in both events at Bulgaria and Czech Open events.

If Sharath has lost some three places to be at 76 from 73, Ghosh has gone down 10 places—from 63 to 73 which should hurt the latest Arjuna Awardee whose performance at Rio was rather pathetic.

Ayhika Mukherjee and Priyanka Pareek with their sterling performances last month have entered the world ranking list for the first time—Ayhika is ranked No. 70 while Priyanka is No. 137 in their respective categories.

However, the gains for Manav, a junior, are enormous. In U-21 he ranked No. 135 from 173, a quantum leap, and in U-18 he is placed at No. 40 from No. 70, until a month ago.

Unfortunately, Archana Kamath Girish who had made a steady progress in recent times, has come down few rungs in U-21—she is ranked No. 100 (previous 79)—and in U-18 category she has lost her grip considerably to be at 47 from No. 36.

There are others like Ronit Bhanja and Kaushani Nath who have lost several places to be down the ladder. But Siddesh Pande has gained to be at No. 133 from No. 140.

In Under-15 section, both Manush Shah and Payas Jain have gone down along with Tanisi Kirtarni while Diya Chitale clibled to position No. 76 from No. 91. Her medal winning performances, including gold, at Hammamet in the Tunisia Open has propelled her to better rankings. West Bengal Prpti Sen, too, made her debut on the world ranking list, occupying No. 55 spot.
