New Delhi, May 15: Payas Jain did India proud as he finished a silver medal in the Hopes Boys singles final in the SET 2016 Thailand Junior and Cadet ITTF Golden Series which concluded in Bangkok today.

After doing well in the group stages and having maintained a clean slate, the Delhi boy led Group 1 to enter the main draw where he enjoyed first-round bye. In the quarterfinals he beat Sitisak Nuchchart of Thailand 3-1 and then defeated Hong Kong’s Kwan Yiu 3-1 (9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6) in the semifinals.

In the final, where he ran into another Hong Kong boy Nok Yu, Payas had everything going his way until the second game as he led 2-0. However, in the third, the Hong Kong boy staged a nice recovery only to consolidate it further and level the score 2-2.

In the crucial decider, Pyas had no answer to Nok’s aggressive play and succumbed without much of a fight as the Hong Kong player won 3-2 (6-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-3, 11-6) to claim the gold.
