Bhavina strikes gold in Thailand

New Delhi: Indian's Bhavina Patel made her country proud, winning gold at the ITTF Thailand Para Open 2023. The Tokyo Paralympics silver medallist defeated local girl Wijittra Jaion 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 13-11 in a gripping singles final of a Class 4 event. 

 

Bhavina dropped the first game but fought back strongly to lead 2-1. But the Thai put up a brave front in the fourth game, stretching the Indian.

 

Bhavina tasted success before at ITTF events, the Fa20 Spanish Open and the ITTF Egypt Para Open.

 

India also won four other medals, including a silver and three bronze.

 

Besides Bhavina's gold, Hitesh Dowlwani settled for silver. He lost to Indonesian Komet Akbar 0-3 in the final. Sonalben Patel went down 5-11, 11-8, 3-11, 7-11 to Korean Jiyu Yoon in the semifinal, as did Jehan Dorab to Joo Sung Park, another Korean, 4-11, 6-11, 4-11. Devyani Walhe finished with a bronze when she lost to Thailand's Janisha Khompast 8-11, 10-12, 9-11 in Class 10.
