Bhavina wins three gold, Sonal joins the party

New Delhi: Bhavina Patel made a strong statement, grabbing three gold medals at the ITTF (Fa20) at the Para Open, held at Giza, Egypt, recently.

 

The Tokyo Paralympics silver medal winner claimed gold in the singles event of Class 3-5 against compatriot Sonal Patel in a closely-fought final encounter, winning the contest 13-11, 11-6, 13-11. Though she got extended in two games, the 35-year-old Bhavina maintained a clean record of not dropping a game throughout, including in the group and knockout matches, proving her dominance in her category. Sonal had to settle for the silver medal.

 

However, the duo from Gujarat teamed up to win gold in the women's doubles Class 10, played in the league format. The pair had to play four league matches, first sailing past Sangeeta Sutariya and Shital Dharji 11-2, 11-3, 11-3, Lamiaa Mohammad and Faiza Mohammad 11-5, 12-10, 11-9, Maona Abdelhak and Karalay Sabah 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 before outsmarting the Kazakh duo of Alexandra Stepanova and Saule AidarKhanova 11-1, 11-4, 11-5 to top the league.

 

In Class 10 of mixed doubles, Bhavina teamed up with Jasvant Chaudhary beating the Egyptian pair of Hassan Tolba and Faiza Mohammad 11-4, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8 for the gold.

 

Sonal also claimed the gold in mixed doubles in Classes 4-7 as she combined with Ramesh Vija  Chaudhary to beat the French duo of Flora Vautier and Francois Geuljans in straight games in the final. The Indian pair won 13-11, 11-9, 11-3.
