India’s Divya Deshpande, who had impressed at the GAC GROUP 2012 ITTF World Tour Brazil Open in Santos earlier this year in June, was the player to create the greatest impression on the second day of play, Friday 5th October, at the ITTF Euro-Africa Circuit Egypt Open in Cairo.
In Santos, in the first stage of proceedings, the 22 year old beat Chile’s Berta Rodrigues and Brazil’s Ligia Silva, both players who competed in the London Olympic Games, to finish in first place in her group and thus progressed to the main draw.
Almost three months later in Cairo it was a different story; it was a very different story indeed.
 Second Place in Group
She finished in second place her first phase group losing to the host nation’s Galila Nasser on the opening day of play (11-8, 6-11, 11-8, 8-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-9).
Disappointment on the opening day but on the second day, it was a very different story.
Very Different Story
She caused the biggest shock of the tournament to date beating Egypt’s Dina Meshref, the no.2 seed and also on duty at the London Olympic Games, by the very narrowest of margins in a thrilling seven games duel.
Divya Deshpande won 12-10, 11-9, 8-11, 6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 14-12.
Egyptian Hopes End
Defeat for the second seed but not for the other leading names in action in the opening round of the Women’s Singles event.
All ended the hopes of host nation players.
Spain’s Sara Ramirez, the top seed, beat Nermin Sabry (11-8, 11-6, 11-5, 11-5); India’s Poulomi Ghatak, the no.3 seed, defeated Farah Abdel-Aziz (8-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-4, 11-7) and Hungary’s Rita Kertai, the no.4 seed, ended the hopes of Sara Hassan (11-8, 10-12, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7).
Two Men Excel
Meanwhile, in the Men’s Singles event, where the seeded players have yet to start their campaigns (they enter proceedings in round two); there were two upsets of note.
Both came in all Egyptian duels and both resulted in a player with no World ranking beating an adversary of stature.
Aly Lashin accounted for Omar Bedair, World ranked no.506 and Shady Sonbol defeated Karim El-Shaarawy, globally listed at no.763.
