Manush, Reeth win titles in Ecuador

 

 

New Delhi, November 7: Manush Shah claimed the men’s singles title when he beat Mexican Juan Jesus Gomez 4-1 (11-7, 11-9, 11-13, 11-7, 11-9) while Reeth Rishya defeated compatriot Anika Das 4-2 (6-11, 11-4, 11-6, 16-18, 11-1, 11-6) to snatch the women’s singles crown in the finals of the ITTF Ecuador International Open yesterday.

 

Left-handed Shah played brilliantly to open up a 2-0 lead before dropping a game. But in the end, the Indian triumphed. On the other hand, Reeth began badly against Ankita but steadied to go 2-1 up. But the Siliguri paddler came back strongly in the fourth game to level the score in an extended game. Nevertheless, Reeth regained composure to take the fifth and sixth games to wrap it up.

 

However, in the men’s doubles, Shah and Sanil Shetty lost to the Mexican pair of Arce Dario and Gomez 2-3 (7-11, 11-4, 11-3, 9-11, 8-11) after leading 2-1. The Indians had to settle for the silver medal. It was a similar scene in the women’s doubles and Ankita and Reeth went down to Cossoio A. Arantxa and Barcenas Clio, also from Mexico, 4-11, 11-6- 7-11, 13-15 to contend with the silver.

 

Earlier, Mudit Dani made it to the quarterfinals before losing his match to Gomez 11-6, 6-11, 9-11. 0-11. 11-13, while Shetty lost in the pre-quarters to Jeremy Cedeno of Ecuador 5-11, 6-11, 2-11, 4-11
