Manush, Reeth win titles in Ecuador

 

Manush Shah claimed the men’s singles title when he beat Mexican Juan Jesus Gomez 4-1 (11-7, 11-9, 11-13, 11-7, 11-9) while Reeth Rishya defeated compatriot Anika Das 4-2 (6-11, 11-4, 11-6, 16-18, 11-1, 11-6) to snatch the women’s singles crown in the finals of the ITTF Ecuador International Open yesterday.

On this day, a year ago, the table tennis fraternity lost one of its pillars in S.M. Sultan to the dreaded Covid-19. Sultan, 61, admitted to a Vijayawada hospital, didn’t even know that his wife had passed away the previous day. Nor did he anticipate that his only son, also admitted to the Covid ward, would follow him to the grave just a day later.
