Indian paddlers to kickstart Games preparation from Muscat

 

A 12-member team of Indian paddlers will be embarking on a trip to Oman to compete in the WTT Contender, beginning February 27. The Muscat events will kickstart their preparations for the forthcoming Commonweal Games (Birmingham) and Asian Games (Hangzhou) in August-September.

The mixed pair of G. Sathiyan and Manika Batra has moved four places up to be at No. 11, according to the latest World Ranking released this week.

TT Nationals postponed

 

Amid the Covid surge, the Special Executive Committee of the Table Tennis Federation decided to postpone events in three categories (Under-15, Under-13 and Under-11) in the ongoing UTT National Ranking (Central Zone) Table Tennis Championships here today evening. It also decided to put off the Cadet & Sub-Junior Nationals that were to begin from January 11.

REWARDING 2021

 

If 2020 was a year of inaction for most sportspersons because of the pandemic, 2021 became a significant year for them. The vaccination programme brought much-needed reassurance and relief to all stakeholders, and sports could restart. More importantly, the July-August Olympics in Tokyo, despite so many uncertainties, could be completed hassle-free. Though Euro 2020 and Wimbledon had just ignited the initial hopes, the Olympics paved the way for all others to follow suit.

Payas, Suhana to return home with bronze from the Worlds

 

Payas Jain, following the footsteps of Suhana Saini, ensured himself at bronze at least in the Youth Under-19 Boys when he beat Iran’s Naved Shams in the ITTF World Youth Championships at Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, last night.

Suhana Saini continued with her medal-winning streak when she defeated Romania’s Bianca Mei Rosu 4-3 (8-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 10-12, 11-7) to enter the semifinals today in the ongoing ITTF World Youth Championships at Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal.

Sathiyan lone Indians left in the singles fray

 

G. Sathiyan was the lone Indian to enter the round of 32, beating Russia's Vladimir Sidorenko, in the World Table Tennis Championships in Houston yesterday. He will now take on Aruna Quadri of Nigeria, who is ranked No. 17, later on, Wednesday night.
