Arnav upsets Divyansh, other seeds survive

Indore, May 31: Divyansh Kashyap, a TTFI wildcard entrant, became the only seeded player to make his exit in the Round of 64 in the Under-13 Youth Boys singles of the 83rd Cadet & Sub-Junior Nationals at the Abhay Prashal, here today.

The sixth-seeded Divyansh went down 1-3 to qualifier Arnav Panwar from Uttar Pradesh. But for him, the rest of the seven seeds in the section moved into the Round of 32. However, in the newest category of Under-11, all the eight seeds kept their dates with destiny. All of them advanced to the pre-quarterfinals with ease. Playing for the first time in the Nationals, these boys kept the faith and justified the billings.

Vatsal Duklan, who was also the top seed in the Central Zone that preceded the ongoing Nationals, failed the cross the final hurdle and lost to Akash Rajavelu of Tamil Nadu. With a hard-fought first-round victory over West Bengal’s Rajashri Pratim Dutta, he has kept his chance alive for another shot—this time a bigger one—in the Nationals. Leading 2-0, the Haryana paddler dropped a game, but his Bengal rival could not capitalise on the third game win, letting the top seed cross the line.

As for Akash, he began shakily in the first game against Shreyas Mankeshwar of Maharashtra but steadied to win the close match. The Tamil Nadu boy has the potential to go all the way to the final as he did last week. However, Akash could not push himself up in Under-13 and existed in the Round of 64.

In the Under-13 category, top-seeded Sarthak Arya went along smoothly until Sparshik Suresh chose to challenge him in the third game. But the Delhi boy, who made several unforced errors, curbed his attacking instincts to nullify the effects of Sparshik’s controlled game. All these winners will play another round this evening before the D-Day tomorrow.

The Under-15 Youth Boys, too, will complete two rounds today.
