Nithyashree topples second-seed Yashaswini

 

Dehradun, December 12: Top-seeded Payas Jain and second-seeded Yashansh Malik made decimated their opponents Samyak Kashyap and Chitrax Bhatt to enter the Under-19 Youth Boys singles quarterfinals of the UTT National Ranking Championships at the Multipurpose Hall here today.

 

Payas, who won a bronze medal at the Youth World Championships in Portugal, disposed of his Karnataka’s Samyak Kashyap 4-0 in less than 20 minutes, while Yashansh repeated the scoreline against Chitrax Bhatt of Gujarat. Among the other seeds, a defensive H. Jeho showed enormous patience to account for Tamil Nadu’s Preyesh Raj Suresh 4-1, and unseeded Vishwa Deenadayalan, also from Tamil Nadu, prevailed over sixth-seeded Aadarsh Om Chetri 4-2.

 

Seventh-seed Jash Modi from Maharashtra went down fighting to qualifier Soumyadeep Sarkar of Bengal 4-3, the best match of the day.

 

In what was a touch-and-go round 32 match, Soumyadeep upstaged Jash in the decider. But before that, both matched stroke for stroke, keeping their chances alive. In the decider, the Bengal lad was superb with his execution. In the match between Vishwa and Aadarsh, the Tamil Nadu player had the measure of his opponent that paved the way for his triumph.

 

In the Youth Under-19 Girls, unseeded Nithyashree Mani of Tamil Nadu upset second-seed Yashaswini Ghorpade of Karnataka 4-2. Though Nithyashree took the lead, Yashaswini came back to win the second. It was the turn of Nithyashree to surge ahead, and then the Karnataka girl followed suit in the next. However, the Tamil Nadu lass made most of her chances in the fifth and the sixth to seal Yashaswini’s fate.

 

In another round 32 match, UP girl Radhapriya Goel enacted a similar scene against Maharashtra’s Ameet Vidhi Shah. But Radhapriya, playing as a TTFI wildcard, went all out to win the fifth and sixth games to enter the quarterfinals.

 

In other matches, top-seed Suhana Saini, third-seed Diya Chitale, fifth-seed Swastika Ghosh, and eighth-seed Taneesha Kotecha moved into the quarterfinals.
