Indore, February 17: Abu Rizwan of IA&AD defeated Parag Aggarwal of Uttar Pradesh 3-1 to emerge champion in the Men 40+ section on his maiden appearance at the 26th Masters National Table Tennis Championships which concluded at the Abhay Prashal here today.

Prior to the final, the UP paddler was the favourite for the title but Aggarwal was not in his elements when it mattered the most and was having thigh muscle pain. However, he fought well in the opening game which went neck and neck. At 10-9, Aggarwal’s missed his chance to deuce and put the ball out to let Rizwan go 1-0 up.

But in the second, the UP paddler came back strongly to take level the game. And that was all he could do as Rizwan won the next game rather easily, surging ahead with a sizeable lead. In the foruth, it was a one-horse race as Rizwan ran up a 5-0 lead before conceding a point to his rival. And Aggarwal managed to take one more point before Rizwan romped home winners with no worthwhile opposition in sight.

In Men 50+, former India international Sunil Babras of Maharashtra defeated West Bengal’s Vivek Kumar Arora 3-1 to win the title. The final was a well contested one with little separating the two players, except the experience and temperament of Babras who executed his shots well at crucial junctures.

The opening game, it was a touch-and-go affair after deuce. Both players missed a game point each before Babras managing to put it across to go 1-0 up on extended points. But in the second, Arora did well to stop Babras’ surge to level the score. In the third, Babras started well before Arora overtook him at 7-5 only to let the opportunity slip by.

Similarly, in the fourth game, Babras led 4-0 and then 10-4, just needing a match-point. But a surprise attack launched by Arora almost brought him the desired results as he took five points on the trot to close in on the lead. But Babras completed the task when he got the service back to seal his victory
