Qualifiers play catch up as seeds bide time

Durgapur, January 21: Even top-seeded Manav Thakkar will not get any breather and will get into action straightaway when main draw event gets underway in Junior Boys singles of the 11Sports 79th Junior and Youth National Table Tennis Championships at the Sidhu Kanu Indoor Stadium here from tomorrow.

The group matches that got over today threw up as many as 56 qualifiers who made the second stage cut and they, along with top eight seeds, will form part of the draw of 64 players with no byes offered to anyone.

As per seeding, based on their ranking points, Manav is followed by SFR Snehit from Telangana (No. 2), PSPB’s Jeeet Chandra (3), Manush Shah from Gujarat (4), Soham Bhattacharya of Kerala (5), Parth Virmani of Delhi (6), Anukram Jain of PSPB (7) and Payas Jain of Delhi (8).

But in Junior Girls, 10 players will enjoy first-round byes since 46 qualifiers have emerged winners from as many groups. Prapti Sen has been given the pride of place in the list. Other players who follow the West Bengal girl include PSPB’s Archana Kamath (2), Swastika Ghosh of Maharashtra (No. 3), Yashini Sivashankar of Tamil Nadu (4), Ishita Gupta of Delhi (5), Poymantee Baisya of West Bengal (6), Selenadeepthi Selvakumar of Tamil Nadu (7) and Srushti Haleangadi of Maharashtra (8).

Except for a couple of bad results, that too in latter groups, almost all others took their appointed place in the second stage. For instance, promising Aditi Sinha of Maharashtra lost 0-3 to Shrubabti Moita of West Bengal. This pushed Aditi out of reckoning as the Shrubabti made the cut despite being placed third in the group. She also accounted for Rajasthan’s Shreya Choudhary by the same margin.

Another Maharashtra girl to bow out at the group stage was Vidhi Ameet Shah. She lost to third-placed V. Laasya of Telangana 3-2 in a tough second round match. Assam’s Adrija Sarmah also was sent packing by Pritha Banerjee of West Bengal, who also posted a 3-0 win over Kavya Jatyanth of Kerala.

But there was a setback for West Bengal, the hosts, when Rohan Ghosh found himself out of reckoning when Karan Jawahar of Tamil Nadu beat him 3-1. Rohan just needed to win the only match as the second player had failed to put up an appearance. But for these minor ‘’upsets’’ the rest of group leaders had taken care of themselves.

In Youth Boys and Youth Girls, the group qualification processes are in progress and 56 and 48 qualifiers, respectively, make the grade to join the top eight seeds for the main draw events beginning tomorrow.

As for seeding, Ronit Bhanja of West Bengal is the No. 1 seed in Youth Boys while Prapti Sen again gets the top place in Youth Girls, thanks to her fantastic form this season.

The others who have been seeded in Youth Boys include: Manav Thakkar (2), Jeet Chandra (3), Siddhesh Pande (4), Sanish Ambedkar (5), Ali Mohammad (6), Ravindra Kotiyan (7) and Utkarsh Gupta (8).

In Youth Girls, Prapti is followed by Selenadeepth Selvakumar (2), Moumita Datta (3), Ayhika Mukherjee (4), Archana Kamath (5), Priyadarsini Das (6), Kaushani Nath (7) and Swastika Ghosh (8).
