Telangana's 40+ men emerge champions

Hyderabad, April 8: Mohammad Zubair Farooqui led from the front to help Telangana claim the team trophy as the hosts scored an emphatic 3-0 win over Maharashtra A in the Men's 40+ event in the UTT 30th Masters National Table Tennis Championships at the Saroor Nagar Indoor Stadium today.

Zubair, who maintained a clean record in the team championships, defeated Onkar Hari Jog 3-2 to set the ball rolling. Chandrachud, taking over from his teammate, thrashed Santosh Raoji 3-0, even as Deepesh Singh completed the job, beating Deepak Kadam by the same margin.

The Telangana squad showed tenacity throughout the championships and disposed of higher-seeded teams, including top-seed and defending champions Indian Audit yesterday.

In a clash of two IA&AD teams in the 50+ category, their B team proved their superiority by overcoming the A squad 3-2 in a nail-biter.

In Women's 40+ and 50+ finals, Gujarat claimed the gold medals in both sections, pushing their rivals to settle for the silver medals. Though their 40+ women easily beat Karnataka 3-0, the 50+ women had to endure the ordeal for quite a while before subduing Madhya Pradesh paddlers 3-2.

The doubles and singles finals will be completed today.
