Maharashtra, Karnataka and MP win titles

Hyderabad, April 4: The men's teams from Maharashtra and Karnataka emerged triumphant to lift the 70+ and 80+ trophies after beating Delhi's B side and Delhi, respectively, in the UTT 30th Masters National Table Tennis Championships at the Saroornagar Indoor Stadium today.

In the 75+ section, Chandigarh overcame solid Gujarat resistance to win the trophy with a 3-2 verdict.

In the women's events, Madhya Pradesh defeated West Bengal 3-2 in the 60+ category, and Maharashtra B downed Madhya Pradesh in the combined categories of 65+, 70+, 75+ 3-2 to wear the crowns.

All finals, except the one between Maharashtra A and Delhi B finals,  went the distance. Gopalan Swaminathan's brilliant performance in his singles and Satyanarayan's win in the decisive rubber helped Karnataka paddlers dethrone Delhi in the 80+ category. The same Delhi squad, comprising Anand Prakash and Khazanchi, won gold in the last edition at Jalandhar, pushing Karnataka to contend with the silver. This time, however, Karnataka turned the tables on Delhi to wrest the trophy. K. Satyanarayan won the crucial fifth rubber after beating Anand 3-0.

In the 75+ category, Patanjali Kumar's heroic display—he won both his singles—helped Chandigarh snatch the trophy from Gujarat in the 3-2 victory. Despite trailing 0-2, Guajrat recovered to level the score at 2-2 before Patanjali beat Rajput Dhirubhai 3-1.

Madhya Pradesh's Rashmi Soni, Rubi Kaur and Sandhya Patwa shared the burden spiritedly in the see-saw final in the Women's 60+ section, each winning a rubber against West Bengal. Only Mantu Murmu, a solid player, could not carry the team alone as teammates Maity Krabi and Bula Somani failed to stop the MP paddlers.

However, their women had to be satisfied with the silver medal in the combined categories when they lost to Maharashtra's B squad, comprising Ujwala Bhanudas Sutar and Rajeshwari Mehta. Though they lost the first and fourth rubber to Rita Jain, they pulled it off with a win in the decider.
