Adamas and Panjab Universities edge Jain Varsity out

Lucknow, May 25: The women's squad of Adams University from Kolkata elbowed out Jain University in a three-way tie to enter the Khelo India University Games 2022 quarterfinals at the BBD Badminton Hall today.

In the bargain, Adams also pushed Panjab University girls to the second spot, despite losing 2-3 to the latter in their last match in Group D.

After their last-round matches today, Chitkata University and the University of Madras qualified from Group A, while Delhi University and SRM University, Chennai, made the grade. In Group C, Chandigarh University and the University of Calcutta emerged in that order to qualify.

In a gripping last-round match in Group D, the fight for the No. 1 spot brewed between Panjabi and Adamas. Expectedly, defensive Anjali Rohilla, who represents Haryana in national events, put Panjab Unversity in the lead with a 12-10, 11-3, 11-1 win over Shreya Ghosh. Capitalising on it, Tanushree Dasgupta defeated Munmun Kundu 13-11, 8-11, 11-4, 15-3 in the second rubber that went on and on, thanks to two extended games.

Panjab University lost momentum somewhat when Paavan lost to Dipanwita Basu 8-11, 9-11, 5-11. The worst followed when Munmun Kundu, in her reverse singles, accounted for Anjali in a tough battle for survival. Mumun did survive, winning the tie 8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 6-11, 7-11. Her perseverance saw the Adams girl resurrect her team, taking the last two games. But Tanushree outsmarted Shreya Ghosh 11-9, 14-12, 11-9 in the decider. Yet, it did not make any difference as Adams found themselves taking the top perch in the group.

Delhi University kept a clean slate and sounded a warning to other teams in the fray with another easy win over Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji University. Vanshika Bhargava, Trisha Gogoi and Tisha Kohli fashioned the victory for DU.

But SRM University from Chennai overcame yesterday's loss to DU and registered wins over Jadavpur University and Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji University to claim the qualifying slot. In their last round today, Kavyashree Baskar beat Sreetama Biswas 11-4, 11-2, 11-7 to set the ball rolling as Gladlyn Flora downed Surbhi Patwari 4-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-5. Pavithra accounted for Yamini Mishra, winning in straight games of 11-1, 11-3, 11-2 in their last tie to seal their berth.

In the men's section, a section of the last round will be played tomorrow to facilitate players attending the formal inauguration of the Games by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the evening.
