Superstar Manika makes history, takes Indian TT to another level

 

Manika Batra became the first ever Indian paddler to win the women singles gold at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on Saturday. The 22-year-old, not only put up a dominating show in the final, but simply rattled her Singaporean opponent Mengyu Yu, the No. 3 seed, to add a second gold to her booty. Manika won 4-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-2, 11-7).

Gold for Sharath & Co at Gold Coast

 

Indian paddlers proved yet again their special liking for Australia as the men squad, following the footsteps of their women, decimated Nigeria 3-0 to bag their second team gold medal at the ongoing CWG at Gold Coast today.

"A pure team work," said coach Massimo Costantini even as he gave full credit to Manika Batra, who carved out a special niche for Indian table tennis as the country became the only second nation in the history to win gold in women’s team event at the Commonwealth Games.

Sharath in top 50 chart, joins Sathiyan

 

A. Sharath Kamal, who is leading Indian table tennis contingent at CWG in Gold Coast, joined compatriot G. Sathiyan among top 50 in world ranking, jumping 22 places to be at No. 48—just two places behind the leader Sathiyan (46).

Positive Sharath-led squad leaves for Gold Coast

 

A nine-member table tennis squad, led by triple-gold medallist A. Sharath Kamal, coaches Massimo Costantini and Soumyadeep Roy along with two support staff (a masseur and physio) left this morning for Gold Coast to participate in the Commonweal Games, beginning on April 4.

Ghosh placed under provisional suspension

 

The Executive Board (EB) of the Table Tennis Federation of India has placed Soumyajit Ghosh under provisional suspension, pending final outcome of the police investigation and court verdict, if any, on the alleged rape charges against him by a teenager.
